Create Better Maps with Global Mapper - Experience the power of professional mapping!

Good News! Now you can Create Better Maps with Global Mapper - Experience the power of professional mapping!

Global Mapper is a comprehensive software package which includes much more functionality such as easy to use viewer/editor capable of displaying the most popular raster, elevation and vector datasets (now including GeoPDF®!); convert, edit, mosaic, reproject, print, track GPS; utilize GIS functionality on your datasets; unsurpassed technical support with no extra support fees!

Global Mapper includes the ability to directly access multiple online sources of imagery, topographic maps, and gridded terrain data. This includes access to worldwide high resolution color imagery from DigitalGlobe (watermarked access for free), detailed street maps from OpenStreetMap.org, and access to the entire TerraServer-USA database of USGS satellite imagery and topographic maps free-of-charge.

Global Mapper also has the ability to easily access WMS data sources, including built-in access to elevation data and color imagery for the entire world, and to view elevation and vector data in true 3D with any loaded data draped on top of it!

Global Mapper

Global Mapper is more than just a utility; it has built in functionality for distance and area calculations, raster blending, feathering, spectral analysis and contrast adjustment, elevation querying, line of sight calculations, cut-and-fill volume calculations, as well as advanced capabilities like image rectification, contour generation from surface data, view shed analysis (including Fresnel) from surface data, terrain layer comparison (including differencing), and triangulation and gridding of 3D point data. Repetitive tasks can be accomplished using the built in scripting language or comprehensive batch conversion functionality.

Have you ever received a dataset that does not match the projection of your current project? Simply load the dataset into Global Mapper, change the projection, and save the file to match your coordinate system. If the dataset is larger than the area you are interested in, export the data using the crop feature and change the projection and format of the data at the same time.

Your data files can be loaded as layers, for example a Digital Elevation Model (DEM) can be loaded with a scanned topographical map to create a 3D view of the map. A digital aerial image can be draped on the surface together with vector contour mapping to create a stunning and informative graphic. The results can be printed, or the workspace can be exported to a high resolution raster image for use in a presentation or report.

Key Features of Global Mapper:

Provides direct access to DigitalGlobe high resolution color imagery and OpenStreetMap.org detailed street maps for the entire world from within the application!

Provides direct access to the complete TerraServer-USA satellite imagery and topographic map archive for the entire US free-of-charge within the application!

Provides easy, direct access to WMS data sources, including built-in access to the complete 30-m NED database, the 3-arc second world SRTM database, and color global Landsat imagery free-of-charge within the application!

Supports true 3D viewing of loaded elevation and 3D vector data including draping of any loaded imagery and vector data over the 3D surface.

Crop, reproject, and merge any combination of raster data and elevation data, including DRGs. You can also crop data to an area feature.

GeoPDF® SUPPORT! You can import GeoPDF® files and export any collection of loaded data to new Geo-enabled PDF files, making your data accessible to any user without requiring them to have any mapping knowledge.

DIGITIZING SUPPORT! You can digitize new vector (area, line, and point) features by drawing them with the mouse. You can also edit existing vector features. Newly created and editing features can be saved to any of the supported export formats. In addition, shapes like rectangles, circles, ellipses, arcs, buffers around existing features, and concentric range rings can be easily created as well. You can also input features via a series of distance/bearing/COGO coordinates.

GPS SUPPORT! You can track a compatible GPS device connected to your computer's serial port or USB port in real-time over any loaded data. In addition, you can mark waypoints at the current GPS location and record a tracklog of where your GPS device has been while connected, all seamless with your loaded map data! With supported devices (such as the RavTrack GPS Transponders from RaveonTech) you can even track multiple GPS devices in order to perform fleet management functions. You can also send any loaded data to comaptible Garmin GPS devices (like Oregon and Colorado devices), thus allowing you to easily view imagery and other data on your handheld Garmin device.

PROJECTION/DATUM SUPPORT! Global Mapper supports accurate conversions between a large list of projection systems and datums. NAD27 and NAD83 HPGN/HARN datum conversions in the US use the NADCON conversion method, and the NTv2 datum conversion method is used for the NAD27 (Canada), AGD66, AGD84, and NZGD49 datums. Custom datum conversions can be easily added in either 3-parameter or 7-parameter form if a required datum transformation is not already supported.

EXPORT SUPPORT! You can export both vector, raster, and elevation data to a variety of formats (see below). You can merge any combination of data sets, regardless of source scale, type, and projection. You can also breakup your data into a regularly spaced grid on export if you'd like as well.

IMAGE RECTIFICATION! You can graphically rectify (georeference) any JPG, TIFF, or PNG image and save the results to a new fully georeferenced image. Vector data can also have a rectification process applied to it after loading to allow morphing vector data to fit other data sets.

CONTOUR GENERATION! You can create contours for any combination of elevation data. You can also specify the contour interval to use. The generated contour data can then be exported to any of the supported vector export formats (see previous item for a list).

Automatic triangulation and gridding of 3D point (i.e. LIDAR) data sets, such as ASCII XYZ files. This allows you to convert a set of elevation samples into a fully gridded data set, which can then be used for contour generation, line of sight analysis, and view shed analysis, among other things. The data can also be exported to any of the supported elevation grid formats, such as USGS DEM.

Multi-Spectral Support! With Gloabl Mapper you can easily load and display imagery with more than 3 bands of data and configure which bands are used for the red, green, and blue color channels. You can also export your multi-band imagery to new multi-band GeoTIFF files and configure exactly what is the input for each exported band.

Support for combining/comparing terrain surfaces, such as DEMs. This allows you to generate a new terrain surface by combining/comparing two loaded terrain surfaces with operations like subtraction (difference), averaging, and min/max. The results can then be exported to any of the supported elevation grid formats, such as USGS DEM.

NASA World Wind Support! Any loaded data can be exported to JPG or PNG image tiles setup for immediate display in NASA's World Wind application. The necessary .xml file is also automatically generated.

Google Maps Support! Any loaded data can be exported to JPG or PNG image tiles setup for immediate display using Google Maps in a web browser. The necessary HTML file is also automatically generated.

Virtual Earth Support! Any loaded data can be exported to JPG or PNG image tiles setup for immediate display using Microsoft's Virtual Earth interface in a web browser. The necessary HTML file is also automatically generated.

Advanced screen capture. You can capture the contents of the screen to a BMP, JPG, PNG, or (Geo)TIFF file of user-specified resolution.

Batch conversion of almost any input data data files to any compatible export type.

Automatic collar removal for DRG, DOQQ, BSB, GeoPDF®, and other formats. You can now have the collar of USGS DRG, DOQQ, BSB (marine chart), and GeoPDF® files automatically clipped off. This allows you to seamlessly view a collection of adjacent files. Manual collar cropping is also supported.

Global Mapper supports opening SDTS DLG, SDTS DEM, and most other file types directly from .tar.gz and .zip archives. This saves the major headache of decompressing each SDTS transfer into a separate directory.

Good News! Global Mapper Version 12 Beta is now available!Compared with Global Mapper 11, numerous significant enhancements and bug fixes have been made to Global Mapper for this release.

Significant New Features of Global Mapper 12:

  • Added built-in access to the NAIP color high-resolution imagery for the entire United States via the File->Download Online Imagery/Data menu command.

  • Added built-in access to the ASTER GDEM terrain data at 1.5 arc second (~45m) resolution for the entire world via the File->Download Online Imagery/Data menu command.

  • Added 'Point Styles' tab to Options dialog for vector layers with point features allowing users to setup the styling of points in a layer. Now users can use the default type-based styling, apply a single style to all point features in a layer, setup an attribute-based styling system that styles the points based on the value of an attribute value or the display label, or randomly assign colors to the dot or custom symbols for points in a layer. Watch this video:

  • Updated the Download Online Imagery/Data interface to group data sources to allow easily finding data sources of a particular type or covering a particular area.

  • Updated the Control Center to support assigning groups to selected layers via the right-click menu. Those groups can then be collapsed in the Control Center to allow easily selecting, closing, or hiding/showing that group.

  • Added newright-click option to the Digitizer Tool for creating a regular grid of areas anchored at some point and of user-specified size, rotation angle, and naming.

  • Updated theexport interface to replace the long sub-menus with dialogs allowing format selection to prevent overflowing the export format lists off of the screen.

  • Updated themap legend display based on vector types to allow labeling each style in the legend by the feature type, name, or any attribute value, in addition to the feature description which is what was always used before.

  • Added new EDIT_VECTOR script command (replacing the ASSIGN_TYPES command) to allow adding/updating feature attributes values and display labels, reclassifying features, rotating/scaling/offsetting feature coordinates, or marking features as deleted by searching loaded features for matches against their attributes/label values and/or types.

  • Updated PDF export to allow using a separate layer for each raster/elevation file exported to a PDF file rather than always combining them into a single layer.

  • Made grid line setup be saved in workspace files and map layout files, so your grid spacing setup will be saved separately in each workspace.

  • Allowed adding/updating per-vertex elevations for selected line and area features from loaded terrain layers using the Digitizer Tool.

  • Added elevation units selection for loaded vector layers to the main Feature Types option tab for the layer (moved from Projection tab), making it much easier to find and work with.

  • Added option to area volume measurement to find the cut height at which the cut and fill volumes would be approximately equal.

  • Added option to save color values and from loaded raster files and select the elevation units when exporting new Lidar LAS files from loaded vector data.

  • Added option to log all incoming GPS fixes and NMEA strings to a file on the GPS Setup dialog.
